Bug Description

Binary package hint: evolution-data-server

After upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy, I have the evolution-data-server process eating all my CPU (from 80% to 95% when no other program is running).

The strace command doesn't help, the only thing that it shows is:
$ strace -p 6303
Process 6303 attached - interrupt to quit
restart_syscall(<... resuming interrupted call ...>

I don't use evolution and it Evolution is not even configured in this machine.

after fresh install on one of my pc's the problem occurrs too - but only on one of them... the one with wireless pc ( i saw ppl mentioning wireless connection in other reports so i guess it may be important)

Same here on a fresh Hardy install (beta 1) with all patches.
The evolution data server consumed 50% CPU until I killed it. I'm not using evolution. It's not even started on this machine.

Same here. It happens after having introduced a audio CD in the DVD drive, I don't know if it is related or not.

I can't use my usb mouse anymore (with irqpoll option enabled in kernel boot options, in /boot/grub/menu.lst).

After killing the process, I can use my mouse as before.

I had the same mouse-blocking problem with Firefox 3 which was using lots of CPU, no problem with Firefox 2.

I have a similar issue. It is intermittent upon logging in to my system; it will some times happen and others it will not, with no telltale sign as to why. I have never used evolution(mistakenly opened it once or twice, but always canceled out of the configuration wizard), and I do not have a wireless card installed in my computer, so it is not directly related to that, as suggested by ergo, above. Nor have I inserted an audio cd in to my dvd drive(actually, there is seldom a disc in my drive).

I have a dual core Athlon 64 chip, and its process takes up full usage of one core(it does not touch the other one), and have not personally experienced any issue with my mouse while this problem occurs. Perhaps, though, the lack of issue with my mouse is because I still have one core of my CPU to handle it.

I have the same problem. I just installed the beta of Hardy Heron and in system monitor it says evolution-data-server-2.22 is using about 50% of my cpu. it doesn't really matter that much though, because it's dual core and its only using one of them so everything else isn't slowed down by it. What is evolution-data-server-2.22 anyway? What will happen if i end its process?

Same issue on a dual core dell. Nothing extra installed. Upgrade from Gusty. Don't use evolution. No wireless. I have other issues with networking that are annoying. The nm-applet is constantly spinning and sometimes it takes 10-15 minutes to get a solid DHCP connection.

evolution-data-server is eating up all of my spare CPU cycles and it is making my mythtv unable to playback smoothly. Please fix this or post a work around.

The work around is to type top on the command line to see what number
evolution-data-services has. You then type kill -9 number.

I still see this behaviour in hardy! Just had a look. The worst part is
actually not the CPU cycles but IO. Evolution-data-server does use all
available IO, which makes other apps and the whole startup process
unresponsive.

I tracked this down with the pidstat utility.

The funny thing is, that this behaviour stops, when I start evolution
itself.

One case when I experience this is, when a resume failed and I have to
override it and start from scratch. Evolution just showed me a message
on startup, that it needs to recover some messages. Maybe this is
related to why evolution-data-server freaks out.

Anyhow, evolution is getting worse with every release. Now it does not
"go online" by itself anymore, when nm connects. It every once in a
while comes with messages, that it can't authenticate on some mail
servers and I have to retype the password. Magically, it does not have a
problem with the stored pwd anymore after I restart evolution, ....

I am going to switch.
