Bug Description

Samba Authentication Error : possibly due to new authentication system ?
Ubuntu 8.04 dev branch Alpha6 fully updated as of march 20th

example:
default@Tiger:~$ smbpasswd
Old SMB password:
New SMB password:
Retype new SMB password:
Could not connect to machine 127.0.0.1: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE
Failed to change password for default

Cannot interface with samba to change password locally / enter password on remote computer to access local share. Also local samba frontend gsamba doesn't work (probably due to this error).

Users are automatically imported in the samba password database on install, but their password is not set. Thus it's impossible to change your user samba password the first time. You need to initialize first the user password by running smbpasswd as root:

$ sudo smbpasswd user_id

Then a new samba password will be set and you'll be able to change your user samba password using smbpasswd.

Can you confirm that this is your problem and the solution works for you ?
