Bug Description

Installed the kernel update from 6.2.0-35 to 6.2.0-36 today (Oct 30, 2023). After reboot, USB WiFi dongle was no longer recognised. Rebooted into previous kernel (6.2.0-35) and have no issue. Not sure what broke, or if it is a regression of some sort. Also, how to upload the bug as stated below, when booting into that kernel does not allow WiFi connection.

Can you attach the journal log from one of the runs with kernel 6.2.0-36?
$ sudo journalctl -b -1

Adjust the '-1' (previous boot) above to find a boot of kernel -36.

I have a possibly related issue: after updating from 5.15.0-88 to 5.15.0-90 (on Nov 2, 2023), my external USB HDD stopped working. When booting into 5.15.0-88 it still works.

Errors:

For me this was caused by bug #2043197 and fixed after upgrading to 5.15.0-91.101.

Today (Nov 21 2023) the kernel updated to version 6.2.0-37 and the same issue remains. Perhaps I need to try one of the mainline kernels Ubuntu maintains and see if 6.3 or 6.4 has the same problem. I know that I was able to use the 6.2 kernel this way several months ago and I had no issue with my WiFi dongle. In fact, I had switched to the 6.2 kernel so I could use this WiFi dongle. Then 6.2 became available through the regular update method, and it worked fine until these last two kernel updates. I will attach a log shortly.

I think I solved it. Hopefully.

After much scouring of the Internets, I stumbled upon what is likely the issue. It seems that quite some time ago (pre 6.0 kernel days) I had installed a github driver for my dongle. I thought I had uninstalled that driver and had been using the kernel driver, but it seems not. In the modprobed folder is the .conf file for this driver. The kernel driver was blacklisted, so I unblacklisted it, rebooted and I am now typing this update from the current kernel 6.2.0-37. YAY!!

I guess this can now be closed.
