Bug Description

Setup:
Dell Vostro 1500, Core 2 Duo, nVidia GeForce 8400M (not currently used)
Installed Hardy alpha 6, KDE4

To save someone 5 minutes of head scratching, I'll repeat: that's KDE4, not KDE3. However, looking through the /etc/init.d/kdm script, I see references to kde3, so not sure ...

Symptom: Monitor goes completely black (not even anything on ttys) when I stop KDM. I have to restart KDM to get use of monitor back, even for ttys.

Steps to reproduce
1. Ctrl+Alt+F1 -> go to tty1
2. login
3. $ sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop
 ... screen goes blank, nothing can be seen ...
 ... Ctrl+Alt+F1 doesn't help ...
 ... Ctrl+Alt+F7 doesn't help ...

I suspect the only problem is the screen because I can get back:
1. Ctrl+Alt+F1 -> Make sure we're at tty1, where we've already logged in
2. $ sudo /etc/init.d/kdm start -> This is not echoed because screen is off
3. After a long few seconds (15 maybe?), screen turns back on and I'm presented with KDM Greeter screen.

This bug may be related to bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usplash/+bug/102719 , but isn't exactly the same because that bug appears to at least have a blinking cursor. My screen completely turns off when KDM isn't running.

Are you sure this is kdm-kde4 you are running? As far as I know the Kubuntu-KDE4 CD comes with KDM from KDE3. Unless something has changed recently, if it's Kubuntu themed, it's kdm from kde3.

Also, are you using the nvidia proprietary driver?

And, from what I mentioned near the top of the report, I don't know. I do see references to kde3 in the file, so yes? I haven't mucked about with it, just installed from the Hardy alpha 6 install CD, Kubuntu-kde4.
