I only looked at the Git tree so far.

The code on the merge-1.72 branch has its latest changelog entry mentioning 1.71, I'm guessing the branch isn't up-to-date? Also the patches don't apply, and please avoid "WIP patches" commits in the history :).

Can you make sure the branch also includes your work on bug 2041325 ? I'd rather have a single upload for both bugs ;)

This has been adressed as part of the 1.72.1+dfsg0ubuntu1-0ubuntu1 upload that is currently building.

Note that the tag on the git repository doesn't match the merge-1.72 branch, as I amended the changelog. I'll let you rebase if you feel it necessary.
