I have 3 questions for you.
1. Does it actually have bluetooth? There is no indication in lspci output.
The specs here say bluetooth is optional - http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12449_div/12449_div.HTML
2. If the answer to above is yes, then do you know if the wireless on/off switch also makes bluetooth on/off?
3. Have you used bluetooth in the OS that came pre-installed. I am assuming it is some Windows version.

Thanks for looking after my problem! The answer is yes to all three questions.
It does have bluetooth and it works in windows. And the same button turns the wireless and the bluetooth on and off.

I'm also having troubles with the wifi on the laptop. I just discovered that wlan only works if I boot in windows, turn the wifi on then boot back to Ubuntu. Maybe there is nothing wrong with the bluetooth and the wifi.. it's just the damn button that doesn't work.

Bluetooth works if I turn it in in Windows before I try it in Ubuntu. There must be something else wrong if Ubuntu can't turn wlan and bluetooth on if they're turned off in Windows.

Why is this marked "invalid" ? It is an obvious bug.

My experiance:
 - HP nw8440 laptop
 - Ubuntu 8.10 i386 desktop CD (live boot)
 - BT does not work

(WLAN works BTW)

Only after installing BT drivers and HP Wireless Assistant into Windows, I can enable BT and then it works in Ubuntu. At least for one boot, I did not try more.

If anyone is interested, ask for details...
