Bug Description

The modem in my laptop is not supported out of the box. I know this is very
likely a winmodem, but as the goal of the LaptopTeam is to get _all_ hardware
supported, here's the info:

0000:00:1e.3 Modem: Intel Corp. 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Modem
Controller (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [Generic])
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company: Unknown device 0934
 Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 22
 I/O ports at 3400 [size=256]
 I/O ports at 3500 [size=128]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2

Non-free drivers are needed for this modem - sl-modem drivers. Be carefull,
couple of modems reports as "Intel Corp. 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family)
AC'97 Modem
Controller (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [Generic])". They all return (in AT query)
Smartlink signature. But, they are not all Smartlink. This one is. Those with
"Subsystem: Conexant: Unknown device 5422" are Conexant modems.

Some IBM subsystem devices are Conexant as well. It's very difficult to
auto-identify this correctly. We can't distribute the Conexant drivers, which
makes life even more awkward.

If possible, please upgrade to Dapper's 2.6.15-7 kernel. If you do not want to
upgrade to Dapper, then you can also wait for the Dapper Flight 2 CD's, which
are due out within the next few days.

Let me know if this bug still exists with this kernel.

What's the best way to test the modems functionality without an actual phone line?

For starters, I tried to auto-detect the modem port with the "Networking"
administration application, but it could not find any.

Very likely we will never be able to support these modems needing the non-free
drivers that we cannot distribute.

Which I can understand very well. What I don't understand, why did you ask us to
test in comment #5? I took it some support has been added in the kernel, or why
would you ask us?

Was an accident. I spent 3 full days going through 400+ bug reports for the
kernel, and this one happened to get my canned "test dapper" response :)

Sorry about that.

Applies to a HP Compaq NC6000. I installed sl-modem-daemon, I'm having problems with the modem output "no carrier" though.
I'm wondering, is there a compatibility list for dialup for ubuntu? Is there / could we add documentation for that maybe, directly integrated in yelp? That would ease a lot of pain. I guess this would have to start as a wiki, then maybe be integrated in the local docs.
What do you think? I find it sad that the drivers can't be out of the box, mais c'est la vie ;)
