Bug Description

This bug impacts Lifeograph v2.0.3 when using with Spell Checking (en_US).
When we right click on a custom word and click on "Add CustomWord to Dictionary" option, the word gets saved in the following location:
C:\Users\<your_username>\AppData\Local\enchant\en.US.dic

However, it gets saved in some non-English language.
These words need to be saved in English, so we can use the same file as the Custom Dictionary for other applications, like MS Word.

Hello Uday,

I couldn't replicate this on Linux. I will try on Windows, too.

Hi Ahmet,

Thanks for your response and trying to recreate this on Linux. I appreciate your time and attention on this issue. This issue has been observed on Windows 10 w/ the spell-checking parameter set to "en_US".
Affected version of Lifeograph: v2.0.3

Here are some additional details which may help in recreation and resolution:

- Let's consider the word "Lifeograph"; if I type it in a Lifeograph Entry, it appears with a red underline, indicating that it has been recognized as a spelling error.

- If I go open the dictionary file, and manually add the word "Lifeograph" in a newline at the end of the file, it does not have an impact. The application continues to recognize the word as a spelling error.

- If I right click on a custom word and click on 'Add "Lifeograph" to Dictionary' option, the following text appears on the bottom of the file:
਍楌敦杯慲桰਍

- The bug doesn't end here. Even after I click on 'Add "Lifeograph" to Dictionary' option, and that text gets appended to the custom dictionary file, the word continues to be underlined in red.

- If I click on that option again, the last line of the file changes to the following:
਍楌敦杯慲桰਍楌敦杯慲桰਍

- At this point, Lifeograph seems recognize this word as a custom dictionary word and doesn't underline it in red.

So, to summarize, the spell-checking feature on Lifepgraph works only if we add it to dictionary twice. Even then, the dictionary file isn't updated in English.

I hope this helps.

Hi Ahmet,

Perhaps a more sustainable long-term solution would be to give the user an option to choose a custom dictionary file.
I don't know how complicated/challenging it may be to implement something like this across platforms. Regardless I wanted to share this idea with you.

Thanks for a great application.

Hi Ahmet,
Upon deeper examination, I found that the reason I see gibberish is because of some sort of discrepancy with the text encoding. When I opened the file with UTF-8 encoding, things seem to be working normally. Also, once I've purged the entries made with non-UTF-8 encoding, Lifeograph seems to be respecting the Custom Dictionary Words.

Issue resolved. This was due to an encoding issue.
