Bug Description

1. upgrade to hardy
2. boot using -generic kernel
3. hangs very early during boot.

Feisty and Gutsy worked fine on that computer.

Sounds similar to 159312. will try acpi=off as suggested there.

Did you have any luck booting with acpi=off? Would you be able to boot with the 'quite' and 'splash' options removed and take a digital photo of the screen when you see the hang and attach the photo to this report? Thanks.

I guess you meant quiet :)

*acpi=off didn't work
*if I use "recover mode" (i.e. with most grub boot options removed), system hangs on line
  "Begin: ... root file system"

I will try to find a digital camera.

BTW, the line that hangs above is

"Begin: waiting for root file system"

I will try various things:

* wait long enough to see if an initram shell pops up
* try using /dev/hda or /dev/sda in the boot line (and maybe in /ect/fstab)
* dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-2.6.24-generic
* see if info found in issue #32123 helps me (if so let me know what kind of information you want me to save)

ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/c406fc05-5827-40f8-9814-5e4d40e21bc2 does not exist

Indeed /dev/disk is missing.

if I check /proc/modules, it contains:
thermal
processor
fan
fbcon
tileblit
font
bitblit
softcursor
fuse

I can modprobe ide-disk and ide-generic and restart udev without this creating the /dev/disk entries. Not a udev expert, so reading the docs...

I will save /boot and try reinstalling the kernel to see if that helps.

Reinstalling the kernel 'sort of' fixed it. I say sort of fixed it as I can boot, but X is in low resolution and uses the wrong keyboard layout. Maybe nvidia modules are missing for X to auto configure appropriately. Will compare /proc/modules with the one from the /386 kernel. Could this be caused by a kernel dpkg-reconfigure issue ?

Note: I saved the old /boot entries so let know if you want them.

reconfiguring linux-restricted-modules for the -generic kernel fixed the X video issue. I haven't reported that issue separately.

I thus consider my problem fixed. As I said above, if you want to original (buggy) /boot files, just let me know.

Hi Jerome,

Sorry for the delayed response. It's a constant battle to keep up with bug reports in a timely fashion. It's something that we're obviously trying to improve upon so we appreciate your patience. But thanks for all the testing and the updates.

First it would seem that the issue of your machine not booting was resolved with an updated kernel? 2.6.24-12.22? Or you literally reinstalled the same version and it started magically working?

Also, if you can open a new bug report regarding the X issue you saw that would be great.

And for future reference, you can manage the status of your own bugs by clicking on the current status in the yellow line and then choosing a new status in the revealed drop down box. You can learn more about bug statuses at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Status . For example, after you provided the requested information, feel free to flip the status from Incomplete back to Confirmed. Or if the bug is resolved, go ahead and mark it Fix Released. Thanks again for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Feel free to submit any future bugs you may find.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
