Bug Description

I'm using 8.04 x86_64 upgraded from 7.10, but I experienced the same issue with a fresh 8.04 Alpha6 install. I've installed the nvidia restricted drivers from the restricted hardware manager. When I boot, the splash appears just fine and the system fires up. When it's time to launch gdm, however, the screen blanks and the system locks. Ctrl+Alt+F1, Ctrl+Alt+Delete, etc. do not work. I have to hit the reset button on my PC.

Then, I uninstalled the nvidia-glx-new package, and installed the beta 171.06 driver using the shell script provided by Nvidia. I then encounter the same problem upon running startx, however. After another hard reset, when launching gdm I am presented with the "low-graphics" mode screen. If I try to reset it to nvidia in the xorg.conf file, xserver will not start.

Here are the results from lspci -nn | grep VGA:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation GeForce 6200 A-LE [10de:0222] (rev a1)

I tried using EnvyNG, but that just takes me back to the problem of a system lockup when gdm launches.

I agree, they are definitely very similar. My bug was actually occurring with both the generic and the rt kernels (I'm wanting to jam with UbuntuStudio too). Both the generic and the rt kernels work with the latest nvidia driver if I add Option "NvAGP" "0" to the xorg.conf file. I'm not sure whether that's actually impacting graphics performance, though. Got any clue what NvAGP actually does?

The NvAGP option sets whether or not the xserver will use the NVIDIA AGP module instead of the kernel agpgart module - see ftp://download.nvidia.com/solaris/1.0-8178/README/appendix-f.html

Since commenting here, though, I've discovered that my problem seems to be in the NV-GLX extension for X.org.

i use nvidia-glx . . .
i dont have this bug, but I confirm that on upgrade to the version below of kernel, i lose nvidia driver unless I do the following....
_______________________
I'm using 2.6.24-12-generic
upgraded from feisty fresh install to hardy dev version (as of todays versions). Same here, no nvidia.

I followed the instructions on removing packages on page 1...
in synaptic i removed with config also:
nvidia-glx 1:96.43.05+2.6.24.11-12.31
linux-restricted-modules-generic 2.6.24.12.13
linux-image-2.6.24-12-generic 2.6.24-12.22
along with their 'virtual' dependencies.

Then, I reinstalled directly, no reboot....
xorg had been changed to 'nvidia' in driver section so i rebooted,
i got nvidia logo and normal accelerated X

This bug report was filed against an old version of Ubuntu.
Can you confirm whether this is still an issue in natty?

If you don't mind, it would be very helpful if you could update the bug
report in launchpad to 'Fix Released' if it is no longer an issue for
you, or if it is still occurring under natty, please tag the bug 'natty'
so it's easier for us to track.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
