Bug Description

Ubuntu 23.04, when right clicking on an archive the entry "Extract" is translated as "Estratto", but it's wrong, "Estratto" means that is already extracted, and not that I want to command to extract it.

A proper translation should be "Estrai".

However personally I would translate it as "Estrai qui" (Extract here), otherwise, with "Estrai" I expect that a popup asking me a path will appear as there is no location specified.

"Estrai", yes, but where?

I would have guessed it's this string:

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/mantic/+source/nautilus/+pots/nautilus/it/518

but the Italian translation has been "Estrai" since 2021.

From where do you right click?

Which file manager tool do you use? I can't see that in your screenshot.

Please run these commands in terminal, and let us know the result:

echo $(LANGUAGE=it gettext -d nautilus 'Extract')
echo $(LANGUAGE=it gettext -d nautilus 'Extract to…')

Weird...

echo $(LANGUAGE=it gettext -d nautilus 'Extract')
echo $(LANGUAGE=it gettext -d nautilus 'Extract to…')
Estrai
Estrai in…

BONUS:
echo $(LANGUAGE=it gettext -d nautilus 'Estratto')
Estratto

So are you using something else but nautilus?

That's pointless. gettext only translates original (English) strings.

No, it's the default "File" or "Nautilus" that is shipped with Ubuntu 23.04.

Moreover I found another mistranslation: "Aperto con..." should be "Apri con..." ("Open with...").

Ok, I figured it out. Important to use the exact original strings...

$ echo $(LANGUAGE=it gettext -d nautilus '_Extract')
_Estratto
$ echo $(LANGUAGE=it gettext -d nautilus 'Open _With…')
Aperto _con…

But both those translations have already been corrected in the 23.10 development version:

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/mantic/+source/nautilus/+pots/nautilus/it?search=_Extract

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/mantic/+source/nautilus/+pots/nautilus/it?search=Open+_With

And the issue isn't important enough for a stable release update of 23.04. So I closed this bug as "Fix Released".
