Bug Description

Binary package hint: sun-java6-bin

There is no /usr/bin/javaws in sun-java6-bin amd64. This makes Java Web Start applications unusable on Ubuntu Gutsy amd64

Also, the suggestion to install j2re1.4 is completely wrong.

$ LANG=C javaws
The program 'javaws' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install j2re1.4
-bash: javaws : commande introuvable

Workaround: install ia32-sun-java6-bin which provides /usr/bin/javaws.

I can confirm the issue. On my hardy up-to-date 64bit this is what I get:

~$ usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/bin/javaws -viewer
bash: usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/bin/javaws: No such file or directory

Guido, this is not the same issue: java-6-openjdk is an other package: openjdk-6-jre. And javaws exists in the current version (6b09-0ubuntu2).

The file is still missing in Ubuntu 8.04 (sun-java6-jre 6-06-0ubuntu1):

ls -l /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/bin/javaws
ls -l /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/javaws

That's because it's missing upstream (Sun doesn't ship 64 bit plugin or javaws..).

The upstream bug is: http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4802695

Cannot do my banking because of this. I would encourage everyone affected by this bug to report upstream. And chances are that something can be done about this on a corporate level as well. Is the source code released by Sun for community to recompile it?

Sun Java 6 update 12 is now available, providing 64-bit plugin and web start support:

Please upgrade to u12 from u11 in Jaunty, and make a sun-java6-plugin package for amd64.

No, it's not: https://jdk-distros.dev.java.net/

That page indeed does not list Java6u12 yet, but it is offered on the
official java.sun.com site for some days, as the current stable
release:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

There is an announcement:
http://weblogs.java.net/blog/opinali/archive/2009/02/sun_jdk_6u12_re.html

It has release notes:
http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/6u12.html

Maybe https://jdk-distros.dev.java.net/ did not pick up u12 yet, but
then it should soon.

Again, there is not yet an "official" announcement for the distributable 6u12. Please read the licenses carefully.

Some people have reported getting the 64-bit browser plug-in to work in Ubuntu in comments on the original bug report at bugs.sun.com. So, you may be able to download the release from Sun and get it working right now. Otherwise, hopefully we will see the new 64-bit stuff packaged for jaunty.

Should now be packaged for release in Jaunty. See the changelog for sun-java6-plugin here:

Java Web Start is included in the packaged version of Sun's JRE 1.6.13, which is in the Jaunty repositories.

However, it is NOT installed somewhere in the default path --- i.e., typing 'javaws' in a terminal window gives you:
The program 'javaws' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install openjdk-6-jre

However, you can still invoke it with /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/javaws.

This is a little silly, you shouldn't get this message if javaws is actually installed. So, I think this bug should not be marked "fixed."

Aaron, for me:
sudo update-alternatives --set javaws /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/javaws
works well.

Marking as fixed. Java Web Start is provided in the sun-java6-plugin package in Ubuntu 9.04 on amd64, and works out-of-the-box for launching Java web applications from Firefox or GNOME.
