Bug Description

Evergreen 3.9

I believe this is a wishlist item and not necessarily a bug.

The issue: Staff create a patron note with a long title (longer than 40 characters), but only the first 40 characters display in the patron summary column.

The displayed title of the note in the patron summary appears to be hardcoded to 40 characters.

The library in this case would like 60 characters to display.

One option would be to change the hardcoded value. However, if it's the kind of thing more libraries are interested in, then it might be better served if it was library configurable.

I imagine a case could be made (I'm not trying to make it, just acknowledging it) that whatever the limit, it should also apply to the title of a note when it's created.

Our consortium (Bibliomation) removed the character limit entirely. I think a library setting makes sense in this case. I haven't checked the Angular interface yet to see if the limit is hard-coded there.

I think you can also make an argument that there should be no limit on display at all. Truncating the output presumes to know more about the user's display than is likely possible. If there isn't enough room to display a long title, that can be handled by CSS in the browser.

I'd also argue that for systems that wish to limit the length of note titles, that should be done when saving the note.

I personally think the 40 character limit seems very silly, especially since hovering over the note in the Patron Summary only displays the body and not the rest of the title.

Converted alert messages also get the following title "converted Alert Message, real date unknown", which doesn't even display fully in the summary, resulting in "converted Alert Message, real date unkno". Why?

I would be in favor of removing the limit entirely or at least controlling it through a library setting. If a limit is set, I agree with John that the limit should also apply to the title field when the note is created so that we aren't left with oddly truncated notes in the summary.
