I fixed the bug like this:

sudo gvim -p /usr/share/hplip/base/password.py

119 #distro_name = get_distro_std_name(os_name)
120 distro_name = get_distro_name()
I commented out 119 and inserted 120 in it's place

then it ran fine.

Note I fixed the bug like this

This is the same as https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/2003739 and the fix in Debian is released. Please provide it in the Ubuntu repository.
