That error message sounds like a problem with the Nvidia driver, but your primary GPU seems to be Intel so I don't know why it would fail to "load GUI".

affects: xorg (Ubuntu) → nvidia-graphics-drivers-390 (Ubuntu)

Oh the Xorg logs show:

  (EE) no screens found(EE)

so this is bug 1543192 but triggered by some unusual issue with Nvidia driver 390:

[ 24.161625] nvidia-uvm: Loaded the UVM driver in 8 mode, major device number 511
[ 24.420223] NVRM: failed to copy vbios to system memory.
  [ 24.420545] NVRM: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x30:0xffff:663)
[ 24.420603] NVRM: rm_init_adapter failed for device bearing minor number 0

Please try:

sudo apt install --reinstall nvidia-driver-390 nvidia-dkms-390

and reboot. If that doesn't fix it then please just:

  sudo apt remove nvidia-driver-390 nvidia-dkms-390

as a workaround.

Hi, reported similar issue in #2016459.
reinstall nvidia-driver-390 nvidia-dkms-390 didn't make a difference for me

Fallback to intel works on local laptop, but prevents me using 2x 4K external screens.

Tried both options, neither allow me to get to the log in screen. Just a flashing underscore in top left of the screen. The ubuntu splash screen is seen after post but drops out to scrolling text there are some dependency warnings in a orangey brown colour.

I will screenshot and upload if it helps. It may just be that this model of laptop is too old. If I get nowhere with this I will just have to go back to Ubuntu 22.10 where it was all working fine.

Had the same issue, also with nvidia 390 due to using an old gfx card in my laptop. Had to go back to 22.10.

Hello, same issue after upgrading from 22.10 to 23.04 on Dell Precision M4600 Series / GPU GF106GLM (Quadro 2000M).
Have to purge 390, install 525, purge 525 for getting back on xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

For what its worth, I am experiencing the exact same symptoms as described after updating from 22.10 which worked fine to 23.04 this am. My machine however is a HP Proliant Microserver Gen 8. This uses built in Matrox G200eH2 graphics controller. I have tried installing sudo apt install xserver-xorg-video-mga and removing them sudo apt remove xserver-xorg-video-mga to allow ubuntu todefault back to whatever. lspci still shows the mga drivers. After spending15 hours on this I am going to try to revert back to 22.10 and put up with the pain of reinstalling whatever... this is a nightmare.

We're having the same issue on Lenovo Thinkpad W541 with K2100M discrete graphics. These also fit into the nvidia 390 bucket. We couldn't seem to get back to nouveau drivers to work around this situation. Reimaged back to 22.04 for now.

Same problem on Lenovo W540 with Quadro K1100M. Upgraded to 23.04 yesterday (coming from 22.10)

If I boot with an older 5.x kernal it works. So it seems to be an issue with the new 6.x kernal.

According to this forum post over on nvidias forum https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/390-154-driver-no-longer-works-with-kernel-6-0/230959, it seems that the nvidia 390 isn't compatible with kernels above 6.x, and has to be fixed by nvidia?
