Bug Description

Doing a recent update with Hardy, I encountered an error as follows:
E: libc6: subprocess post -installation script killed by signal (segmentation fault) core dumped

Afterwards, apt-get no longer would work and kept giving me some output related to the error. I did not write/copy any of that down. When I rebooted, it would pause on starting up the log daemon, eventually attempting to startx which failed. I tried logging into safemode which got me to the non graphical user logon. After entering username and password, it ended up having a malloc problem and bringing me back to the logon. Thus, I could not log on. I downloaded the latest iso image of Hardy alpha 6 (hardy-desktop-i386.iso) of March 6, 2008. I reinstalled it on my laptop as a fresh install. Once installed I began the updates which downloaded 330+ updates. When it began to install I encountered the same problem as mentioned before. After the crash, I could not finish the install of updates (334 left) and it would not let me open notepad or terminal. I performed a restart am getting this:

Starting system log daemon... (pauses here)

after a while of sitting:

I get more:

NetworkManager: <info> Activation (eth0) Stage 3 of 5 (IP configure Start) scheduled.
NetworkManager: <info> Activation (eth0) Stage 2 of 5 (Device Configure) scheduled.
NetworkManager: <info> Activation (eth0) Stage 3 of 5 (IP configure Start) started...
NetworkManager: <info> Activation (eth0) Beginning DHCP transaction.
NetworkManager: <info> Activation (eth0) Stage 3 of 5 (IP configure Start) complete.
NetworkManager: <info> DHCP daemon state is now 12 (successfully started) for interface eth0

dhcdbd: dhclient 8519 dumped core
dhcdbd: Unrequested down ?:3
NetworkManager: <info> DHCP daemon state is now 14 (normal exit) for interface eth0
NetworkManager: <info> Old device 'eth0' activating, won't change.

... that will continue to pan through with dhclient dumping different core numbers

Now, when I try to use safemode I get:

Recovery Menu
     resume resume normal boot
root Drop to root shell prompt
xfix Try to fix X server

I select xfix and it reconfigures and sends me back to the same menu.
So I select resume and it brings me to:

login: (which i type my user name into)
and get:

init: tty1 main process (4871) killed by SEGV signal
init: tty1 main process ended, respawning

Ubuntu hardy (development branch) tty1

login:

so I cannot login...

It is on kern 2.6.24-11-generic. Running on an Acer TravelMate 4670.
I would give more information but seeing I can no longer log on without an reinstall, it makes it a challenge.
