Bug Description

With the fix of Bug #2015100, I can now install Lunar Lobster on Hyper-V. The issue is that when the system reboots after the install, there is no mouse or keyboard active on the logon screen. When I force a reboot, I can then use the mouse to click the username and use the keyboard to type in my password. When the system attempts to display the Home Page, I have no mouse and no keyboard and the system hangs before completely rendering the Home Page.

In closing Bug #2015100 it was suggested to use the 'nomodeset' option within the grub file. With this set, the system does reboot and is functional.

The issue is that this is a workaround since that option for the system is to bypass the screen settings and keep it in a default mode. Due to this, you can't adjust the screen size, the color depth, or any other screen settings you may want to set.

This behavior is new with Lunar Lobster. I have been running multiple instances of Ubuntu for years on Hyper-V and have had no issues. I am currently running instances of 22.04 for my stable machines, and have also used 22.10 a little, with no issues... meaning, IMHO that this is something due to the new installer not setting something up correctly, or there is a race condition when starting various processes.

Hi Kern,

You are right, I suggested 'nomodeset' as a workaround ; more than as a real fix.

I don't think there is anything that we can fix purely in subiquity (at least for now). So, I will mark incomplete and add 'ubuntu-desktop-installer'. Maybe they will have more suggestions.

One thing worth checking is whether doing a 23.04 install on hyper-v using the old installer leads to the same freezes after login.

We have daily builds available at:

Thanks,
Olivier

Adding a copy of my /var/log/installer, /var/log/journal, and /var/crash (nothing in /var/crash). This was asked for by Oliver to look at what my install of 23.04 looks like, in helping to debug this issue.

Hi Oliver,

I did test with the legacy installer on Hyper-V, as you suggested, and the same issue occurs. That being, after the install completes and the system reboots, the logon screen froze (no mouse, couldn't click on username). I rebooted again and did get the mouse to be active on the logon screen and the system froze when changing to the home page (draws background and background for dash and stops there with no mouse or keyboard). I used the 'nomodeset' and was able to use the system. IMHO, with this testing it appears that the installer is functioning properly, and that the issue is somewhere in the startup of the user session.

Per your suggestion, I have collected the 3 directories into a tar file and attached them to the bug (though the bug system).

Thanks,
...Kern

Hi All,

After digging around, and testing with Lunar Lobster (23.04 pre-release daily builds - including a couple of weeks prior to the release, and the released 23.04 version), I have a possible solution to this issue of the mouse and keyboard not working, and the desktop freezing just after logging in.

This issue is for the installation of Lunar Lobster on a Hyper-V VM. This has not been an issue I've had with installation on clean machines, or setting up dual-boot machines, or releases prior to the Lunar Lobster (i.e. 23 branch) of Ubuntu.

Today, I performed the following:
   > sudo apt-get update
   > sudo apt-get install linux-azure

(PS... it takes a little while to install this, as there is an instruction that times out in the middle of the install of this package.)

After this is installed, I edited the /etc/default/grub file and removed the 'nomodeset' parameter on the 'linux_default' line, so it only has the "quite splash" parameters. Then I did the update-grub and rebooted.

The system now works as expected. In fact, when viewing the "System --> Display" page, the "Resolution" has an actual pull-down list and I can change the VMs resolution without having to use the 'display' parameter in the grub file.

I'm not sure what has changed in the installer, or subiquity, for the new current Ubuntu, however, it appears that when running in a VM on Hyper-V, tighter integration with Microsoft is needed and provided by the linux-azure package. So, maybe the solution at this point is a documentation update?

As a side note, in testing with 22.04 LTS (and the 23.20 release), and prior releases, the addition of this package didn't add/change any behavior.

Closing that ubuntu-desktop-installer report since the component is deprecated. We aren't going to fix 23.10 installer bugs at this point and Noble uses ubuntu-desktop-provision, feel free to reopen/reassign to that component if that's still an issue with the noble beta image
