Bug Description

Hi, I have noticed a big problem with Scribus after upgrading from Ubuntu 22.04 to 22.10.

Despite Scribus showing the same version number of 1.5.8 (23rd January 2022 build - Kinetic reports it as 1.5.8+dfsg-3build1 in apt-cache policy), there is a big difference when loading up a document.

I have tested this on both a laptop and a desktop computer, both computers used to run the older Ubuntu version and documents looked great.

Now when I open the same documents using 22.10 distro version in Scribus the text is overspilling or overflowing in every text box, and it looks like even the line spacing varies slightly too.

This means I now have many large Scribus document files in which the layout is all messed up.

I've tried reinstalling fonts (I mainly use Ubuntu font) and that doesn't seem to help.

Can anyone help with a fix so I can open my documents up correctly please?

Steps to recreate are just create a doc in Jammy using Scribus 1.5.8 - and fill a text box nicely so it ends at the end of the box and fits well and is tracked etc neatly. Then open that same file in Kinetic's Scribus 1.5.9 and you'll see the text no longer fits in the box despite using the same Ubuntu font etc.

Just to add I also tried installing this new test ubuntu-fonts set: https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/ubuntu-font-update-available-for-testing/34676

But it hasn't helped.

It does appear to just be the tracking (or horizontal font spacing) that's causing the problem and causing text to now overflow and not fit. With further testing, the vertical spacing all seems to be the same as it was before.

Also Scribus still reports Ghostscript as 9.56.1 on the About window, same as it did before back on Jammy.

OK panic over, I've found the fix!

When I updated my OS it didn't use the proper version of harfbuzz and left the Jammy one there!

Now I've forced the Kinetic harfbuzz, all is displaying as it should be again.

Sorry for the false alarm :)

This kind of makes me think that harfbuzz could improve its versioning and dependency tracking, but overall this would have been taken care of by some other (unrealted) changes in 23.04, so guess all is fine.

BTW, next time please use ubuntu-bug to file the reports, that would have collected the list of installed packages and somebody else could have spotted the outdated hurfbuzz in there.

Changed in scribus (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete
status: Incomplete → Invalid

Sorry to report I now have this same problem again since upgrading to Ubuntu 23.04 which was recently released.

This time though, I seem to have the correct version of harfbuzz for the OS... I hope someone can get this fixed please? I will report it to ubuntu-bug too.
