mine does not!

/etc/network/interfaces:
iface lo inet loopback

iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.1
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.100

my workaround is to have a second static configuration in network manager (192.168.1.3), after switching network comes up.

hh, add this "auto eth0"

/etc/network/interfaces:

# The loopback network interface
auto lo #<= add this
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
auto eth0 #<= add this
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.1
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.100

I had the same problem and I resolved it adding manually "auto wlan0" to my "/etc/network/interfaces".

But I hadn't this problem with Ubuntu 7.10, so I think that Ubuntu developers should have to resolve it: the network manager must add "auto wlan0" automatically!
