Had this problem while installing OpenOffice in Heron (AMD64). It appears that there is a missing package dependency for Java Runtime Environment in writer2latex. Possibly more correctly addressed with dependencies for openoffice. org-java- common.
Solved by installing: sun-java6-bin, sun-java6-javadb, sun-java6-jre
