Hi Josip,

we are currently testing whether uploading teTeX-3.0 to unstable
(currently in experimental) would cause any FTBFS bugs, and indeed it
does.

I think the proper way of adressing this problem is not to revert a
decision that the upstream maintainers of texinfo and teTeX have made,
and take texi2pdf from current texinfo upstream into the teTeX
packages. Rather texinfo should be updated.

If Josip doesn't show up in the next couple of days, I would suggest to
do bump the severity to serious about 3 days before we plan to upload
teTeX-3.0 and do a 3-day-delayed-NMU (I think this works again with a
queue on gluck) at the same time.

Well, I have no idea how a NMU from a non-DD works, but I guess you can
put in your name into the changelog and upload it as NMU.

BTW: The FTBFS is fixed in version 4.8-0.2.

Best wishes

In general I agree. In this particular case, however, it might be a
little different.

First of all, the purpose of the NMU requires to upload a new upstream
version¹. Consequently, the number of changes isn't very small,
anyway. Adding a line to debian/rules like "(cd doc; make html)" and a
corresponding entry in changelog doesn't make it more difficult to read
the differences in a patch file.

Second, it seems as if Josip is no longer interested in the package, and
hasn't been for quite a while. I have suggested earlier that Norbert
should contact him and ask whether Josip would want to give the package
away, and that Norbert prepare a texinfo package from the texlive
sources that can cleanly replace the old texinfo package (while the
others usually conflict with the respective traditional, teTeX-based
packages, or aren't built at all). This package is the result, but
unfortunately Josip has not reacted at all. As I see now, he hasn't
reacted to the last two RC bugs at all, either. Is he MIA - I guess not
generally.

Under these circumstances, I think the reasons for the usual NMU rules
don't hold, or at least aren't particularly strong: If Josip decides to
work on the package again, he'll have to invest time in getting
up-to-date, anyway (AFAICS there are no patches for the last NMU's,
although one is trivial). Norbert, you should provide one, only for the
Debian-specific parts, and ideally comparing the renamed files with the
right original.

And I'll ask <email address hidden> about Josip.

Regards, Frank

While thinking about this and looking more closely at the package, I
found that Josip has changed some files provided by upstream in the
diff.gz. Norbert, you should investigate what the purpose of these
fixes are, whether they are Debian-specific or not, and whether they are
already incorporated upstream. And you should put information about
your action in the changelog.

¹unless you'd want to go the hard way and backport the missing script to
4.7, and do all the checks that it does work. I wouldn't recommend that.

Frank, can you sponsor this package, i.e. take it and upload it when you
think it is time for teTeX, i.e. in advance of your upload to unstable?

Attached is a patch from 4.7-2.2/debian to 4.8-0.1/debian.

Best wishes

Hi all!

AFAIR I have taken all suggestions into account and generated a new
incarnation of texinfo_4.8-0.1

As with the previous versions, all files can be found at

or

 deb-src http://www.tug.org/texlive/Debian/ texinfo/

I think we do it rather now, than when I'm busy with uploading teTeX
3.0. Is the patch you posted to the bug log still up-to-date wrt to the
version on http://www.tug.org/texlive/Debian/texinfo/?

Yes it is. But:

lintian spits out:
W: texinfo: binary-without-manpage texi2pdf
W: texinfo: possible-bashism-in-maintainer-script postinst:3 '[ "$1" = "configure" -a '
E: texinfo: old-fsf-address-in-copyright-file

E: info: old-fsf-address-in-copyright-file

What the hell is this stupid old-fsf-address-in-copyright-file error. I
have to change this. Manpage I will do later. But what is with the
bashism?! Do you accept it like this? Or should I prepare a new 0.1.

And stole the manpage from tetex.

The package is lintian clean and build in my pbuilder/sid.

THis adress is the wrong one. The right one is in
/usr/share/common-licences.

Done.

After the package is in Debian I will work on the other bugs. Probably
most of them are also solved by upstream already, but this has to be
checked.

Please get the version
 4.8-1
from the tug server. I have fixed all the lintian warnings and errors,
changed maintainer, added several bug-closings due to upstream fixes.
And stole the manpage from tetex.

The package is lintian clean and build in my pbuilder/sid.

THis adress is the wrong one. The right one is in
/usr/share/common-licences.

Done.

After the package is in Debian I will work on the other bugs. Probably
most of them are also solved by upstream already, but this has to be
checked.

Fine - but there's still one problem. You should make it a habit to
test upgrading packages before you upload or provide new versions:
Because it depends on tex-common, but tex-common conflicts with tetex in
sid, it cannot be installed. If you write

Depends: *, tex-common | tetex-bin (<< 3.0)

it should work (I only tried with --force-depends). Just tried, it
does, although there's now an ugly circular dependency between texinfo
and tetex-base; both upgrading texinfo when tetex-base is installed, and
installing texinfo and tetex-base in one run works.

Grmmm. Yes, thanks for pointing this out. I tested it, on
sid+tetex/experimental and sid+texlive, but of course I forgot sid only.

Thanks, I will remember that.

Can we circumvent this?

New -1 packages are on the tug server.

install on current sid.
work with texlive
work with tetex/experimental.
lintian clean.
pbuilder clean.

Hope this is better now. Sorry.

By uploading new packages of tetex-base which don't depend on texinfo -
but since there's no real bad effect, we can as well wait until we
upload, anyway. By the way,

  * changed dependency to tex-common | tetex-bin (<< 3.0) to be installable

This is only understandable when you know the history of texinfo
packages not uploaded to Debian. I'd write something like "Now depends
on tex-common, or tetex-bin until teTeX-3.0 is in unstable". On the
other hand, isn't #253124 also fixed by this upload?

No. THere will be no texinfo format, as suggested by Thomas Esser and
Karl Berry. texi2* use the (pdf)tex binaries as is without the format.
There is no texinfo format in either the teTeX nor TeX live
distribution.

BUt I wanted to discuss this with the submitter before closing the bug.

Added changelog entry:
  * New maintainer: Taking over from Josip Rodin <email address hidden>
as he seems to have abandoned texinfo.

Also, I have added:
  * Acknowledge previous NMU (Closes: #267497, #259280)

New packages are on tug.org (in 10min from now)

Dear submitter of these bugs!

After quite some time a new version of texinfo has been uploaded and
IMHO these bugs have been fixed by the upstream version 4.8, so I have
closed them in either version 4.8-1 or 4.8-2.

Please consider testing your bug with the new version, and if you think
the bug is still present, do not hesitate to reopen the bug and/or
contact me.

Best wishes

Norbert
