I've actually reproduced this myself now:

1. start a new notes file
2. start typing text exactly where the cursor is in the text file

Result: crash

I have uploaded 2.3.8 to my Hardy PPA. It should be safe to try in any release from hardy to karmic. Please try and let us know if that version has the same problem as you reported.

FWIW, I can't reproduce this in 2.3.8 in karmic.
