i typed glxdemo in term and closed the window that popped up

I confirm exactly the same behaviour on hardy beta. I've got Intel 945.

Might be what's causing my frame rate to be 60fps.

glxdemo may not clean up after a window-manager close event properly. However, this is just a demonstration program so that's not entirely unexpected. If the frame-rate is low, that suggests a different problem---e.g., acceleration is not enabled; you can check that by running "glxinfo" command and looking for "direct rendering: Yes" near the top. File a separate bug if a beta install with the latest updates does not correctly autoconfigure your X server for acceleration.
