audio nolonger works after update

After running update manager today, my audio is no longer able to work. It stays on mute all the time. I've run update manager a few times afterward, but no change in result.

Here's what I get when I click on the speaker icon:
"The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.

You can remove the volume control from the panel by right-clicking the speaker icon on the panel and selecting "Remove From Panel" from the menu."

I have the same problem. Removing the volume controls obviously will not solve the issue.

It was so nice to have it work on a fresh install. But now it just broke.
