Bug Description

Binary package hint: alsa-base

After installing 2.6.24-12 kernel (and restricted-modules and ubuntu-modules), my sound card doesnt seem to be recognized anymore.

When starting alsamixer form cli, i get this error:

alsamixer

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device

Here are details about my sound card:
lspci | grep audio
00:0a.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB0400 Audigy2 Value

This device used to be recognized without problems with previous kernel.

Here are the packages related to 2.6.24-12 kernel i have installed:

dpkg -l | grep 2.6.24-12
ii linux-headers-2.6.24-12 2.6.24-12.19 Header files related to Linux kernel version 2.6
ii linux-headers-2.6.24-12-generic 2.6.24-12.19 Linux kernel headers for version 2.6.24 on x86/x
ii linux-image-2.6.24-12-386 2.6.24-12.19 Linux kernel image for version 2.6.24 on i386
ii linux-image-2.6.24-12-generic 2.6.24-12.19 Linux kernel image for version 2.6.24 on x86/x86
ii linux-libc-dev 2.6.24-12.19 Linux Kernel Headers for development
ii linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-12-386 2.6.24.10-12.30 Non-free Linux 2.6.24 modules on 386
ii linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-12-generic 2.6.24.10-12.30 Non-free Linux 2.6.24 modules on x86/x86_64
ii linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-12-generic 2.6.24-12.16 Ubuntu supplied Linux modules for version 2.6.24

I tried to do a sudo dpkg-reconfigure alsa-base with no success.

Any idea what i could have done wrong?

As advised in this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsamixergui/+bug/174979 , i tried to use asoundconf-gtk , but i get this error:

asoundconf-gtk
You need at least one ALSA sound card for this to work!

I realised i had installed linux-image-2.6.24-12-386 too, and i did not boot on the -generic at first.

Tho the problem is still present: my sound card is not recognized anymore, even after booting on 2.6.24-12-generic.

I works when booting on 2.6.24-11

uname -r
2.6.24-11-generic

It seems like an issue with the kernel, right?

Yes, sound support is completly omitted from kernel config/compile.
View file "/boot/config-2.6.24-12-generic" and see "# CONFIG_SOUND is not set". Why, can anybody tell ?

Oh yeah. One more issue with 2.6.24-12-generic is that "console-kit-daemon" segfaults on startup :) Will investigate this further...

Anyway, after finding out that sensors didn't work too, I rolled back to 2.6.24-11. Simple and effective solution.

I am confirming this bug and also asking why the bug duplicate 200338 does not want me to post any updates, and is claiming to be "FIXED"? What is the resolution for this?

This is not a bug for Dell Installs. On Dell Laptops, if you have modem support your modules comes from Dell ppa. If you want modem *and* sound working together you must stay with Dell ppa packages. Maybe you should stick the modules package version to Dell ppa repos.

As you can see, there is no Dell version of 2.6.24-24, so sound is broken when you update because you get package from ubuntu updates.
