Bug Description

Before I upgraded to the latest alpha release of hardy heron I could change my screen resolution to anything I wished.

However, after upgrading from 7.10 (Gusy Gibbon) to the latest alpha release (alpha 6) for Hardy Heron, when I go to system>preferences>screen resolution, the menu shows up with all the options. However, whenever I changed any of the options and hit apply..nothing happens.. the same happens when I click help. In fact the only button that does work is close.

[Update]
In Alpha-6, this behavior showed a non-functional Apply button. Subsequent updates on systems with this issue, then result in bug #198951, which has the same fundamental underlying problem - the driver in these systems apparently do not really support xrandr 1.2 properly. -- bryce

The duplicate refers to nvidia, I confirmed this bug using a machine running trident. Also help doesn't work, so I suspect this is a bug that affects multiple chipsets.

I can confirm this behavior with Intel 915 graphich card and a Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTS/512. Latest updates are installed.
Everytime I change resolution or something like that and click apply nothing changes and the message "Sending client message" is posted.

I'd like to add that "apply" doesn't work, but the settings *are* applied after logging out and in again.

Just to add my specs. my graphics is built-in and when i go to screens + graphics is says I have a "Intel 810". As for the monitor I have no idea what make/model it is as there is no markings what so ever and it just comes up as plug n play.

To those who still can't change resolution it did work for me by changing it via system > administration > screens + graphics.

changing via system > administrations > screens and graphics only work per
login session after logout or restart the screen always reset back to
640x400 and the deskbar applet screw up badly.

This seems to be fixed in current Hardy at least with my two graphic cards.

The issue here is that you're using a card that does not support xrandr 1.2, which is required by gnome-display-settings. I'll add a version check so it gives you an error dialog instead of a non-functioning Apply.

Mikael Nilsson, the issue you are seeing is that gnome-settings-daemon is not restarted automatically as part of the upgrade process, so you may notice Apply doesn't work until a reboot. If you think this is a serious enough issue that we should look into it, please enter a new bug report. (Possibly there is a way to force gnome-settings-daemon to restart with the upgrade.)

For those using Screens and Graphics, this tool will be deprecated by hardy-beta.

Nishi, can you please attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log, /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and the output of `lspci -vvnn`? Thanks ahead of time.

Hmm, nvidia does not support 1.2, but is still capable of resolution
switching and rotation etc via xrandr. Make sure you don't disable more
than necessary. And - better to disable controls than to give errors...

There is the possibility of doing like firefox, a "restart required"
notification, but it's not a big deal.

Anyway, apply works now...

The issue where gnome-settings-daemon was not working is solved by bug 198951.
For the issue where upgraders must restart before Apply becomes functional, I suspect this is now being prompted for in general, and is a transitory issue in any case.

For the requirement of xrandr 1.2 rather than xrandr 1.0 or 1.1, we were able to resolve bug 198951 without putting in that xrandr version check, so presumably it should still be usable with nvidia or other non-xrandr-1.2 drivers, but please test and re-open if not.
