DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu hardy (development branch)"
Linux 2.6.24-11-generic #1 SMP Fri Feb 29 22:08:31 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux
Thunderbird version 2.0.0.12 (20080227)

Whenever I open thunderbird, thunderbird launches firefox (my default web browser) and tries to open this site, which fails. Sometimes it works and goes to en-us mozilla but most of the time it does not. I know from previous experience with thunderbird that this site is something to do with a new version and its features, but usually when you close it, thats it, it does not come up again. But this happens everytime I open Thunderbird.

http://%locale%.www.mozilla.com/%LOCALE%/%APP%/%VERSION%/start/

When in Thunderbird a dialog box appears and states:

Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.

Although, Firefox comes up ok and tries to display the http line above

If firefox is open, 2 tabs appear. 1st one says Page Load Error trying to go to "Firefox can't find the server at %locale%.www.mozilla.com."

The 2nd tab says "Welcome to Thunderbird" , going to http://en-us.www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/2.0.0.12/start/

Please dont update bug with kernel updates this isnt a bug in the kernel.This bug is caused by firefox only being able to open one instance at a time and in the thunderbird package one of the files states to open a new instance, Atleast that is the most common reason, I am unble to test or get the package to fix it at this time so either next week when i can get to it or another person will look into this and add the fix with other fixes.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

I am currently having this problem with Thunderbird version 2.0.0.23 (20090817) having just upgraded to Kubuntu Karmic Koala.

Every time Thunderbird opens, it appears to be attempting to display the start screen, and this is being sent to Firefox. I have registered Firefox as the default URL handler under KDE, since if I don't do that, URLs on my desktop open in Konqueror.

I have tried disabling the start screen in Thunderbird (I have unchecked the "When Thunderbird starts, show the start page in the message area" but to no avail). If I have this enabled, Thunderbird has *two* panes, one unresolved URL with the un-expanded property names in it - http://%locale%.www.mozilla.com/%LOCALE%/%APP%/%VERSION%/start/ - and one with expanded property names - http://en-gb.www.mozillamessaging.com/en-GB/thunderbird/2.0.0.23/start/.

If you revert to the default KDE setting for opening URLs, it seems to make no difference.

If I find any more information, I will post it here.

Additional: I tried editing the instances of this URL I could find in the advanced config editor in Thunderbird, so I could tell which one was being launched (I added /1 and /2 onto the ends of the URLs) and magically the behaviour stopped.

It's been a while since this bug was reported and I'm unable to recreate the problem with Thunderbird 10.0.2 in Oneiric Ocelot. Is this still a problem for you?
