Bug Description

The latest Adobe flash player is version r115, and it is very highly unstable and stops working for no apparent reason, especially when used with nspluginwrapper. I do understand that Adobe's flash plugin is closed source and there isn't anything you guys can do when it comes to fixing its problems, however I have a work around I think you should implement.

The r48 version of Adobe's flash plugin operates VERY well under Ubuntu in almost all situations. The r48 release is very stable when compared to the crash-prone r115.

Since Hardy is supposed to be about stability, I think you guys should remove r115 from the repositories, and use version r48 instead. In fact, I think you guys should completely skip r115 and use the next Adobe flash plugin when its released as long as the stability is up to par with r48.

Several websites will cause r115 to crash, especially Myspace pages. http://myspace.com/darknewday is one of the many examples, the flash based music player will turn all white and stop responding on my 64-bit Hardy install. That same site, when I was using the r48 plugin, works flawlessly. The same can be said of many flash-enabled websites.

Please for the love of god get rid of flash r115.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at [WWW] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in flashplugin-nonfree.

This bug will be marked as a duplicate of Bug 177856.

Flashplugin r48 is not a good option for Hardy, because flash r48 has major security flaws which are fixed in r115. It is unfortunate that Adobe decided to combine the major changes in the flash plugin (i.e. XEmbed and other stuff) with the fix for this security flaw (would have been better if they released the major changes separately).

See http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb07-20.html for more information on the security bulletin issued by Adobe.

It is also important to note that most or at least some of the instability issues can be fixed by nspluginwrapper packages. Bug 177856 contains a patched and a fixed binary package. Please keep the issues regarding the instability of flashplugin-nonfree on 64-bit SMP systems at that bug report.

If you feel this is incorrect, please comment. Thank you.
