Bug Description

Binary package hint: fontconfig

fontconfig-config includes 10-hinting-medium.conf in /etc/fonts/conf.d since 2.5.0-2ubuntu3, but DejaVu Sans looks ugly with medium hinting.
Workaround:
sudo rm /etc/fonts/conf.d/10-hinting-medium.conf
sudo ln -s ../conf.avail/10-hinting-full.conf /etc/fonts/conf.d/10-hinting-full.conf

This setting was made to reflect the current default setting on the Ubuntu desktop in Hardy, which is "Best shapes".

As a general note: due to the nature of fontconfig being a system wide setting and users will always have different preferences when it comes to text rendering, it is actually impossible for us to provide a default configuration that works for everyone. Manual tweaking by the user will aways be needed.

Isn't this entry a duplicate of #199557 ?

Arne, then ship some other higher quality fonts by default. To work around these bugs (originally #199557), although it's most likely a duplicate as Manuel says) I use Liberation fonts, although the view is still a bit blurred.
DejaVu Sans with these settings looks completely odd, I think most users would agree. I don't mind any default, but the problem is that you cannot easily change it from GUI, no matter if you select full or medium select hinting, the problem still persists. Or maybe you expect ordinary users to tweak config files in /etc/fonts?

Arne, why did you apply ubuntu_hinting_and_antialias_confs.patch last month? If the patch was not applied, fonts in qt4 and gnome-terminal are more beautiful. I don't know what is "to have te same default settings for all Ubuntu flavors".

We won't change the default settings to Full Hinting, since most fonts don't support it and it would mess up the display of languages which use non-LCG scripts. If you want to have different settings on your system, you are free to change them for yourself.
