Multiple password prompts when connecting to IMAP server

Bug Description

Binary package hint: alpine

I have set up alpine to connect to an IMAP server.

Every time I try to open the inbox I am prompted for my password. The password prompt is not the standard alpine prompt, but appears overlaid somewhere on the screen (or is sometimes completely invisible).

I am often prompted in this way several times before the inbox is opened. I have managed to successfully open the inbox, but it is difficult.

Another user appears to report the same problem at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=709942 but no resolution has been posted there.

I am using gutsy. The bug appeared in alpine 0.99+dfsg-1; I added the backports repository to get version 1.0+dfsg-1~gutsy1 but the issue still persisted.

I believe you can resolve this issue by adding /norsh to the server hostname in your alpine configuration.

Does that fix it for you? (Alpine by default tries to use "rsh" (ssh noawadays) to connect to the server in question.)

Many thanks, that does seem to have fixed the issue (although I'm now using Hardy and have reinstalled everything from scratch, so it's impossible to be certain!)

Well, if it's closed, mark the bug as Fix released! (-:

Everything that you know is wrong, but you can be straightened out.

I'd call it a workaround, not a fix - the bug still exists in that the UI is messed up by the failed SSH interaction.

I used the same workaround and it worked for me also (using Hardy)
