totem applet on ubuntu 22.04 on amd apu has bad mp4 rendering

when trying to play mp4 videos on my Ubuntu 22.04 platform using the default video applet "totem", I can see the video but there are random black "tearings" in upper left side of the video. Playing the same video using mpv or vlc I see no problems. I searched the internet and someone recommended removing gstreamer1.0-vaapi package, and after that totem worked fine. It is my understanding that this comes at the price of not using the GPU vaapi interface to minimize cpu usage.
