Bug Description

After the latest upgrade to KDE 4.0.2 on Hardy my Panel has minor display issues. At the very bottom of the panel, there is some transparency (maybe 4 px) and the right part of the panel (under, but independent of the digital clock plasmoid) is also transparent. See the screenshot for more.

Thank you for reporting this issue.
Do you have desktop effects turned on?

According to Bug #198399 this issue appears when using desktop effects (at least on nvidia 8400gs with latest nvidia-glx-new)

I just upgraded to 4.0.2 and also have this problem, only with desktop effects on, with an nvidia 7400.
Does someone have this problem with a different graphics brand/driver?

Yes, I can confirm that. Turning of Desktop Effekts makes the panel look normal again. I have a Nvidia 7900 GS with nvidia-glx-new drivers installed.

Yes, I can confirm that too, with a NVIDIA 7300 GS and the same drivers installed. This bug wasn't there with KDE 4.0.1. Furthermore, it's not an issue with inconsistant $HOME/.kde4/ config files resulting from the upgrade, since the problem also happens on a fresly created user account. For now, the only workaround I found is to turn off desktop effects.

on a friend's Laptop there is also 2-3 pixel area at the bottom of the panel where the wallpaper shines through. It runs the latest Gutsy with Riddell's KDE4-Repository and has an ATI x1400 with the latest proprietary drivers. So i don't know if this is related, but disableing the desktop effekts also makes this problem disappear.

Also confirmed on 8500 GT running nvidia-glx-new. As above, 2-3 pixels of transparency under the panel (but only about two-thirds of it) and to the left of the KDE menu.

The same happens on 7950GT with latest nvidia drivers (169.12). There's several pixels transparency under the panel and some 10-13 pixels on both sides of it.

Confirmed with Ati-fglrx.
By the way, have you ever tried to move the panel to left or to right side of the desktop? Aren't plasmoids' positions weird? Maybe plasmoids in the panel should rotate too.

New Information:

http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=158824

According to the KDE-Bugtracker, this is a Qt 4.3-bug and is fixed in Qt4.4. The bug appeared in 4.0.2 since the Panel-config has been backported from the KDE 4.1 trunk - now using the broken SVG rendering. So it sounds like it won't fix untill 4.1 ....

Maybe we can use Qt 4.4 with KDE 4.0?

@Andrius: Qt 4.4 is not yet released, and might not be in time for Hardy.

As on a forum someone pointed out, that with the Heron-Theme, this panel-bug does not occur, I investigated into it and just found some quite simple workaround for that bug:

in the Heron Theme there are PNGs embedded in the SVG, which makes the difference. The Qt-bug obviously only applies to pure SVGs. So I just had to exchange the panel-background.svg in /usr/lib/kde4/share/kde4/apps/desktoptheme/widgets with a similar looking one that has the gradients embedded as *.png.

I must confess that it does not look 100 % exactly as it used to look without desktopeffekts (as there are a lot of transparencies..) but it's definitely better than the old one (with desktop-effects).

I'll try to get it better, when I've got the time - but maybe (for sure) the Oxygen-Artists will do even better then.
