Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-10-generic

After installing the newest 2.6.24-10-generic kernel, I was unable to boot it:

After the message "Freeing unused kernel memory...", there are some warnings, that the kernel is unable to find some files which are on the root filesystem.

Then is stops with the message:

No root-on-loop configured, skipping
Done.
Begin: Waiting for root file system... ...

This may be related to bug #197470 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24/+bug/197470).

Hi Gabor,

Care to test with the latest 2.6.24-11 kernel and linux-ubuntu-modules and verify if this is still an issue? Thanks.

2.6.24-11-generic runs just fine, not an issue anymore.

I forgot the kernel version - I cannot boot up with 2.6.24-12-386 and 2.6.24.12-generic. With the kernel 2.6.24-11-generic the booting process hangs with the mesaage "starting syslog daemon" or something similar.

Since I updated my hardy RC release one day before the final release, I get the no root-on-loop error message (generic kernel).

Tell us how to fix this!

Actually, I just did a chroot from gutsy and made an "apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade" which showed, that I am already up-to-date = hardy final!
So the problem does concern the latest kernel in the final release.
I did not have any problems before the last upgrade!

Where is the fix?

I did not have this problem prior to the last update (2.6.14-16)!

Please advise!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
