Bug Description

Because several add-on plugins I use often are not yet supporting FF3, it would be nice if update-alternatives would be used to configure the default version. Currently this is FF3, which I will not use until my favorite add-ons are ported (without those add-ons, I'd use Konqueror).

/usr/bin/firefox pointing to /etc/alternatives/java, and as alternatives /usr/bin/firefox-2 and /usr/bin/firefox-3.

I don't understand why point at /etc/alternatives/java??

But I'd love support for two firefoxes installed at once.
and use galternatives, update-alternatives to switch between them.
There are a number of plugins that don't work yet in firefox 3 and it's SLOW!!

Just to make a note:
I'm not asking for Konqueror. Specifically I'm asking for firefox 2.

I would also like to see this, it is rather weird that there isn't a choice for firefox to switch
between firefox-2 and firefox-3 while for example java provides alternatives for multiple versions.

I've found that you can do this yourself by running these commands, although it would be nice to set it up by default.

sudo apt-get install firefox-2 firefox-2-gnome-support
sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/firefox firefox /usr/bin/firefox-3 50
sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/firefox firefox /usr/bin/firefox-2 100

That doesn't handle the firefox.desktop files though, as they currently need to be modified otherwise StartupWMClass is incorrect, causing problems with startup notification (note that currently the firefox-2.desktop file has this setting incorrect, see bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/223753 for more information)
