My desktop currently has no theme and looks like a "default" gnome (eg: lots of gray, blue titles bars, gnome icons, plain font, etc)
This happened after an update.

I believe this is the same error as bug #197153.
You can disable the xranr plugin in gconf as specified in that
report.
