Thank you for your bug report. Could you do 'journalctl -b 0 > log' next time you get the issue and attach the file to the report?

Is it after suspend/resume/unlocking the screen? (bug 1961508)

It can happen also after normal boot, not related to resuming or unlocking.

I think we will need a more specific example. Under what conditions does the window go under the dock/panel? What are the steps to reproduce it?

Please also try disabling any gnome-shell extensions you may have added and also run:

  cd ~/.local/share/gnome-shell
  rm -rf extensions

and log in again.

The log in comment #5 says that gnome-shell has crashed in the past. In a Xorg session you might not notice when that happens but app windows might then go under the dock when the dock and shell restarts.

Please:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:

    ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash

Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine. Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please send the links to us.

I have no extensions installed manually.

It happens whenever opening the file dialog, but I noticed if there is no external display connected to the laptop, it didn't happen so far.

I ran ubuntu-bug against the file but the URL doesn't work, returning "Error reports sent from this system", so I'm unable to get the bug ID.

Thanks. That shows the most recent gnome-shell crash was 8 days ago so that's probably not the issue. Let's forget about crashes...

Are you sure the problem isn't caused by locking the screen or the screensaver?

I just realized there's no dot next to the Files icon. So the window is either untracked or it might be tracked on a different monitor/dock.

Please run:

  xrandr > xrandr.txt

and attach the resulting text file here.

Yes it's not related to unlocking at all and I believe it happens only if there is external monitor connected.
And sometimes it opens in full screen mode.

Bug 1947434 sounds similar and suggests the problem only happens with Ubuntu Dock.

no longer affects: gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock (Ubuntu)

This also happens even if the external monitor is connected but switched off.
If no monitors are connected at all, it open with in the main display normally.
