Bug Description

Using Kubuntu 7.10 on my Toshiba Satellite A200 with HDA-Intel audio.

After installing ALSA dirver 1.0.16 compiled by myself, sound card started behaving better: mic and headphones, sound volume wheel and mute button recognized and working well (before they not). But other programs started working bad:

Skype hangs on logging in (when it should play login sound) as well as wine programs start to load then they disappear (note that notepad that doesn't need sound works). If I open Ksysguard before starting one of these programs it works. If I open it after opening such programs it opens a white window without processes. Also trying to open other programs after these software have hanged doesn't work (Xmoto for example didn't start too).

Keeping KSysGuard open before starting Skyipe or wine I can see their processes working in background even if they are not visible on screen, but if i try to kill their processes they don't die (neither with kill command). If I try to turn off my laptop it hangs on "stopping k display manager: kdm" forever. Doing '/etc/init.d/alsasound stop' solves the problems but then I've got no sound so... :D

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at [WWW] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in ALA-driver.

Did sound not work for you to begin with and led you here?

my soundcard doesn't work right with alsa driver. I can hear sounds but headphones jack is not recognized and volume wheel doesn't work too. So i decided to upgrade to latest ALSA and that led me to the problems i have reported.

If alsa sound driver was shutdown then it was ok skype launched but of course without sound. And i cannot kill skype process neither just power button to reboot :/.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and trying to help make Ubuntu better. However, it seems that you are not using a software package provided by the official Ubuntu repositories (seems that you have used binaries compiled by yourself). Because of this the Ubuntu project can not support or fix your particular bug. Please report this bug to the provider of the software package. Thanks!
