This is mariadb refusing to install over MySQL-8.0. It can't auto-upgrade from MySQL-8.0 so it gracefully fails rather than destroying your data.

Making invalid as suggested. You cannot install MariaDB over an existing MySQL-8.0 installation, purge /var/lib/mysql if the data here is no longer relevant and the install will be possible.
