Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg-driver-fglrx

Hello.

First of all, I'm using a common graphics adapter:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility X1400 [1002:7145] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: LG Electronics, Inc. Unknown device [1854:005f]

After the Hardy alphas 1-5 had bugs that prevented hardy booting to x with the live cd, i installed a new daly build image for testing it (Feb, 29 image)

Now the system boots to x fine, using the xserver-xorg-video-ati driver (native resolution 1280x800) :).

However, after enableing the restriced driver xorg-driver-fglrx (seems to be the new 8.02) via a click on the resticted drivers manager, the x-server fails to start leaving a black screen. It is not even possible to switch to other terminals after that, the system locks completely.

Another thing i find funny, is that my xorg.conf seems to be completely unconfigured, no matter which driver i use it looks like this:

--------------------------------------------------------------
Section "InputDevice"
 Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
 Driver "kbd"
 Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
 Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
 Option "XkbLayout" "de"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
 Identifier "Configured Mouse"
 Driver "mouse"
EndSection

Section "Device"
 Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
 Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
 Identifier "Default Screen"
 Monitor "Configured Monitor"
 Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection
----------------------------------------------------------------

As you can see, there is not even a Video Device driver configured. Still the system works fine with the xserver-xorg-video-ati driver.

Thank you,

Andrej

There's nothing funny about it, the xserver can autoconfigure itself pretty well, and uses the (free-) driver that the device needs. Is that xorg.conf after you've enabled fglrx?

I suspect this is a dupe of bug 194963
