Bug Description

Binary package hint: inkscape

After waiting for a few minutes, the window does appear. No output/error is given to explain the delay and cpu usage.
It's not a one-time thing either. Quitting and starting inkscape again gives the same result.

Version: 0.46~pre1-0ubuntu2

Hi Kimiko
does the same happens if you try to reproduce this with a new user account?, i test in my machine and i couldn't observe the behavior you mention.

Thanks in advance.

We've uploaded a preview release of Inkscape 0.46 to Hardy - can you check if you can reproduce this bug on Hardy's inkscape?

Finally got the 0.46 version through the package repository (it always takes a few days to get there it seems). I'm sorry, but Inkscape still does the same thing: wait (appears to hang) with 100% CPU (good thing there's two of them in this PC, eh?) for about 1.5 minutes (or so; I didn't time it) before showing the window and running normally. I've also tried it on my root account (which hadn't run inkscape before I think), but the same thing happens there.
Ah well, take your time finding/fixing this bug. Inkscape isn't a program I use often anyway.

I get similair behaviour. with 0.46.
It uses 100% cpu before it starts. And it takes about two minutes before it starts.

This is the 0.46 version available from the standard ubuntu repo's, on jaunty jackalope.
My cpu runs at 2Ghz.

A pre-release of the upcoming Inkscape 0.47 is now available in Ubuntu
Karmic for testing. Because *so* much stuff has changed compared with
the version you reported your bug against, would you mind re-testing
this new version and see if this bug is now resolved?

Karmic Alpha CD ISO images are available at:

  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/

If you're not testing Karmic yet, there are .debs of this new Inkscape
for Jaunty, Hardy, and Intrepid here:

  https://launchpad.net/~inkscape.testers/+archive/ppa

You might find further bugs when testing this alpha release. If that is
the case, please file a NEW bug report here:

   https://edge.launchpad.net/inkscape/+filebug

Thanks ahead of time for your testing efforts, and enjoy the new Inkscape!

Confirmed with 0.47 in Karmic also,
This happens *for every instance of Inkscape I open* ,
For me its not 100% , Since i have a Dual Core , one core uses 100% , its an overall ~50%

I timed the delay , Each time there is a delay of 10 secs for opening the window and
The CPU usage stays at 50% [100% for 1 core] for ~25 secs even after the window is open.

Other problem i face is ,
there is a delay in the response time when i have zoomed to >1000% [maybe it is not related just mentioning in case it is].

Unlike the OP , I use Inkscape frequently , Pls fix this. :)

This could be related to something I just saw in 0.47. Opened Inkscape, opened an image, opened the XML Editor and Undo History windows. Long after it finished rendering and displaying everything, it remained at about 80% CPU for several minutes, doing nothing I could see.

I started Inkscape from the Konsole ( with 0.47 in Karmic ) and there's what appears after a few minutes waiting, about when the window finally appears :

(inkscape:2037): GVFS-RemoteVolumeMonitor-WARNING **: cannot open directory /usr/share/gvfs/remote-volume-monitors: Error opening directory '/usr/share/gvfs/remote-volume-monitors': Aucun fichier ou dossier de ce type

Let it initialize and then go to Filters -> Remove filters. My CPU usage dropped from 99% to 1% after doing that, so it must be an issue with filters.

@schristoforou: That did not solve the problem for me. Still behaves the same.

I can confirm a similar behavior—several seconds of high cpu load at every start— in Debian Lenny (32bit) backporting version 0.47 from testing. Same behavior in testing 64bit too.

@schristoforou: filter settings didn't solve the problem either.

Bad thing for me, i'm a graphic designer and inkscape works fine on Windows 7 ( dual boot Ubuntu 10.04 x64/ win 7 x64 ). Adobe CS stays the only reason that prevent me to switch definetly
