Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-10-generic

The standard ubuntu kernel doesn't support the new udf 2.5 filesystem, used by DVD burnt under Windows Vista, HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray disks. Since there are already patches available for kernel 2.6.24, they should be applied by default.

Hi User,

Do you know if there have been any efforts to get this submitted and accepted into the upstream mainline kernel? It is a lot of extra work for the Ubuntu kernel team to maintain out of tree patches. As such they typically require evidence of upstream submission before considering to maintain community patches locally. Thanks.

Probably it will be in 2.6.26. Found http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/2/7/102 on the Linux Kernel Mailing List.

Thanks Benjamin. I'll reassign to the kernel team for their consideration but this may be pushed to Hardy+1 (the Intrepid Ibex) since we are currently in feature freeze for Hardy. Thanks.

I think this must not be regarded as a feature but as a bug.

And there really should be no problem with the feature freeze.
UDF 2.5 is now just too widespread to justify waiting with applying it I think.

And imagine all the support problems:
-people think their DVD/Blueray drive's not working with Ubuntu,
-current media not working in Ubuntu
-Vista incompatability (related to bug #000001)
-missing HD media support
-people trying to gain that support by themselves and damaging their system in the process, etc ...

Considering all that it should be a clear choice!

In the meantime people who know what they're doing may find a fairly easy fix here:

ps. It could also be made available as a single .ko file as it does not have outside dependencies.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
