Dock icon still shown after exit with many window indicatros (red dots)

After closing thunderbird successfully, the dock icon is still shown with many window indicators (red dots along the icon).

It's not possible to start thunderbird again from that dock icon.
It's possible to start thunderbird from a shell though.

I have not seen this behaviour with any other app.
