I can darken the background.

But it is still possible, regardless of UI freeze?

No that appears to have about the same contrast. We don't actually have to fix this, but if PR 3520 landed then I would not consider the situation changed at all. This bug would still be open.

I've recently been reminded that on some peoples' systems they perceive the dark grey as black, so subtle changes in shade are not going to be adequate for creating a visible contrast.
