Thanks for the bug report.

Next time the problem happens please immediately run:

  journalctl -b0 > journal.txt

and attach the resulting text file here.

affects: xorg (Ubuntu) → nvidia-graphics-drivers-470 (Ubuntu)

Is it the IBM or the LG monitor that remains black?

I can't see any hints of a problem in the log. It sounds like maybe GNOME can't uniquely identify one of the monitors and so can't remember its preferred setting.

Maybe try enabling Wayland and then see if logging into 'Ubuntu on Wayland' avoids the problem.

To enable Wayland you will need to change the kernel parameter:

  nomodeset

to:

  nvidia-drm.modeset=1

and then run:

  sudo update-grub

and reboot.

Thank you very much for your help.
It is the LG on Displayport or Hdmi that stays black. I have noticed
that when in a dual monitor there is a VGA port connected it is always
the VGA port that is recognized in both Linux and Window; I think that
this is the characteristic of the X86 architecture.
I will try to install Wayland.
Thanks

RESOLVED
Hello
I applied your recommendation by placing nvidia-drm.modeset=1 in
etc/default/grub
and confirmed with
cat /proc/cmdline
BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-5.13.0-35-generic
root=UUID=c8e08c76-0308-495c-8c5a-83f9aa24b1a0 ro nvidia-drm.modeset=1
I replaced the Nvidia 470 driver with the override 510 driver.
Also, I did put the video card from PCIE 2 to PCIE 1.
Everything works perfectly in X mode and this after a standby or a reboot.
DP monitor 1 and VGA monitor 2

I tried the Wayland and had several bugs; general crash or severe screen
corruption.

Thanks a lot for your help
PS if you have ideas for the Wayland mode I'm willing to try.
