It's listed in lsblk output and in apt policy firefox output.

Does this mean that the "regular" (as in standard repository method) and snap application are both installed?

Anyhow, I am able to confirm that it's the same here on my 20220303 build.

Of course, this build is a bit wonky to begin with. It didn't show up until today. One download started at 75% and the other started as 1% (using zsync on two different devices). So, who knows what's going on?

Also, the icons are slightly different.

I'll just add (another?) confirmation

`apt-cache policy firefox` (97.0.1+build1-0ubuntu1) shows deb installed
`snap list` shows snap firefox (97.0.1-1) installed too

It's still there in today's daily (20220305.1) and this time I decided to go a step further.

If you 'sudo snap remove firefox' the uppermost Firefox icon is removed from the menu (and the snap app Firefox is removed, obviously). The more traditional Firefox installation remains usable and in the menu.

So, yeah... We can safely conclude that it's a snap app and the traditional app.

This is occurring with the Ubuntu jammy Desktop (canary) ISO too

It can result in multiple firefox entries appearing on the dock (one for snap & one for firefox) which makes finding where your window/tab is more difficult, and there is no way to differentiate which is which in the default GNOME window

eg.

Hitting Activities and entering "fire" in the search and two entries appear

This means the PACKAGE the bug is filed against is wrong; but I'm unsure currently what to change it too; thus no change.

To answer a (support) query on UF today I booted a recent

Ubuntu-MATE jammy install

Install recorded on ISO QA tracker at 2022-03-10 22:00 - http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/429/builds/245310/testcases/1300/results

and present were two firefox entries; snap & deb both installed.

I saw earlier today discussion on #ubuntu-desktop (https://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2022/03/22/%23ubuntu-desktop.html) where I wonder if item at 08:59 may hold something rather useful

oSoMoN: see https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~mozillateam/firefox/firefox.jammy/view/head:/firefox#L34 08:59

If it does; Ubuntu-MATE maybe won't be impacted by this issue in a day or so, and we should chase this up with oSoMoN to include us (& Ubuntu canary ISO)

I'm getting (on my primary box; running GNOME currently)

guiverc@d960-ubu2:/de2900/lubuntu_64$ echo $(xdg-settings get default-web-browser)
firefox_firefox.desktop

which differs to what I get on a daily booted on hp 8200 (lubuntu jammy)
"firefox.desktop"

Is there something here??

In a Lubuntu Jammy test -

I opened Muon package manager and found "firefox transitional package" text - this is a transitional dummy package. It can be safely removed.Firefox is now replaced by the firefox snap.

I removed it and the result was only one Firefox entry on the application menu.
Opened the remaining Firefox entry and it was 98.0.2 - mozilla firefox snap for Ubuntu ...

I zsync'd the ubuntu-desktop-CANARY ISO and still two menu firefox entries are present there.. alas I didn't check ISO date on boot (IMG/ISO issues currently). I suspect given date on ISO it's not current

Ubuntu-MATE ISO does NOT have this issue on ISO 2022-03-25, only a single firefox entry exists there.

Tested 2 machines and this no longer a problem - only the Firefox snap installed and one entry on application menu.
