Thanks for the bug report.

It looks like the kernel is having some trouble with the touchpad which would explain the problems you are experiencing;

[ 2031.208] (EE) event5 - SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: kernel bug: Touch jump detected and discarded.
See https://wayland.freedesktop.org/libinput/doc/1.15.5/touchpad-jumping-cursors.html for details

...

and

[ 3279.131] (EE) event5 - SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: libinput bug: 1: invalid tap event TAP_EVENT_RELEASE in state TAP_STATE_TAPPED
[ 3279.346] (EE) event5 - SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: libinput bug: 1: invalid tap event TAP_EVENT_MOTION in state TAP_STATE_TAPPED
...

Assuming this is not a hardware problem, you would need a newer kernel or newer libinput to fix it. Please try booting the latest Ubuntu from USB to see if it is already fixed:

Please also try using a USB mouse as a workaround.
