text in italics appears as boxes

Bug Description
An update to my system has broken italics support in gnome terminal. This makes it hard to edit latex files with VIM, since VIM will show all text within \emph{} as boxes.
If I type the following command at the prompt
=> echo -e "\e[3mfoo\e[23m"
I get three empty boxes where the letters "foo" should be. See the attached screenshot.
