update-manager crash on start

I run on 8.04a

When I start the update manager to install last updates, I get a message
saying that the initialization of the package is impossible and asking
for submitting this bug with the following message:

'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_hardy_universe_i18n_Translation-fr, E:Les listes de paquets ou le fichier « status » ne peuvent être analysés ou lus.'

I get the same message error with synaptic.

When trying to update directly with apt-get, I get the same error:

Lecture des listes de paquets... Erreur !
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_hardy_universe_i18n_Translation-fr
E: Les listes de paquets ou le fichier « status » ne peuvent être analysés ou lus.

I confirm this bug,

You need to edit the file 'vi /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_hardy_universe_i18n_Translation-fr' and removed the ^M (0x0a or CariageReturn) characters on line 4 and the line empty line 5.

This is linked with the 3dchess Description field.

You can also remove the universe repository from the source list.

i remove the problem
