Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

adept manager was updating and failed part way into the installs after downloading them all. I'm a new to Linux user, so I did the old MS "restart" trick... didn't help. After the failure, it seemed to be holding my add/remove programs files hostage also.. can't ask to add Firefox.. very frustrating! I'm using "Gutsy Gibbon" 7.10. This is the text of the error window whose title is: "Database locked-adept installer", Another process is using the packaging system database (probably some other Adept application or apt-get or aptitude). Would you like to attempt to resolve this problem? No will enter read-only mode and Cancel to quit and resolve this issue yourself.

Mark,

thanks for taking the time to report this bug. This is actually an occurrence of a known issue (bug 48627) that is being worked on. I will mark this report as a duplicate and you can follow developments in the other thread. In the short term running the following command should solve your problem:

sudo dpkg --configure -a

this tells dpkg to configure the remaining packages that were interrupted and should then release the database lock.

Hope that helps,
Rich
