Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdebase-kde4

Problem in Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon with kde4 and desktop effects enabled in package mozilla-mplayer.

Package version is: mozilla-mplayer 3.40-5ubuntu5 MPlayer-Plugin for Mozilla

Video playback works fine, the problem is a grey translucid window appears on the top left part on the screen and it's always on top of everything so it's impossible to watch the video. The problem doesn't appear without the kde4 desktop effects.

Also in fullscreen the video doesn't play. You can see fractions of second by right clicking on the video.

Are you using the KWin effects and not Compiz? I am using Hardy with mozilla-mplayer 3.50 and I am not seeing this. Does this happen for all videos or just certain videos? Anything else I can try to recreate this issue?

I have the exact same issue. Video works fine, but it leaves this "window" on the top left of the screen. Running kde4 Hardy beta, with kwin desktop effects enabled.

I see the same problem using Kubuntu 8.04, using KWin effects no compiz.
Simple way to reproduce the issue is visit the apple.com/trailers site and try watching any of the trailers.

I see the same - and it doesn't have to be video. Listening to a Real Audio stream on the bbc.co.uk website using mplayer-plugin also leaves the phantom window. Restarting kwin (killall kwin && kwin) removes the phantom. KDE4 version of Kubuntu.

It's a shadow problem. kwin seems to be trying to add a shadow to the mplayer plugin that is running in the browser. I assume as it's not a normal window it gets messed up with the placement.

I have the same issue. Right now a shadow covers 80% of my screen after opening an audio in Firefox with MPlayer. It happens all the time after MPLayer is closed. The only way to get rid of it is to restart KDE. I am running Kubuntu 8.04, Nvidea chipset in an MSI video card. KWin effect and no compiz. In fact, just did a clean install of Kubuntu.

O.K, did some playing around. Went into system settings. Unchecked "add a shadow under windows" clicked apply and the shadow went away. Seem to be what is causing the problem.

If this is still a problem in KDE 4.1.1 it probably warrants an upstream report.
